Understanding the Current Systems and Results
Understand the enterprise system and make it explicit! The first step in conducting a comprehensive assessment of the organization is to understand the enterprise as a system, the integrated and aligned sub-systems, and begin to respond to the performance criteria questions. This requires that the organization understand and document the current context (organizational profile) and the current design of the processes, practices and the results that they produce. Genitect provides four workshops to facilitate this process: organizational profile and enterprise development, organizational system and results documentation, system alignment and integration, and writer’s workshop (formal document - award application).
Organizational Profile and Enterprise Model Development
The profile workshop is an interactive 2-day session that identifies the organization’s key factors and develops a plan for the self-assessment and application writing process. Participants produce tangible products, including documented key factors that describe the unique context of the organization (organization description and challenges), an enterprise model (system diagram) and an assessment and writing plan.
Document Processes and Results
Once the key factors are identified and what is relevant and important to the organization is understood, the next step is to document the current systems and results. This series of workshops facilitates the documentation process for the systems and results in three key competency areas of strategic leadership, execution excellence, and organizational learning. The workshops use the worksheets from the Baldrige User’s Guide CD-ROM to capture a preliminary “picture” of the existing system and results based on the knowledge of the participants. Following the workshop the participants continue to refine the system descriptions and fill in gaps based on interviews and document reviews throughout the organization.
System Integration
The systems integration workshop series is composed of two workshops that ensure internal consistency and alignment of the organization’s documented key factors, processes, and results. The first workshop is conducted immediately following the completion of the Baldrige User’s Guide worksheets following the Document Processes and Results workshop. This first workshop is an interactive two-day session that analyzes the linkages between the key components of the organization’s performance excellence system as documented by the writing team.
The second of two workshops is conducted after the first draft of the formal document is complete. This second workshop is similar to the first in content and format - an interactive three-day session that trains the participants to analyze the linkages between the key components of the organization’s performance excellence system as documented by the writing team. The key difference is this second workshop analyzes the first draft of the formal document that describes the processes and results. These two workshops are scheduled at key points in the documentation process in order to build quality into the final product.
Formal Report and Award Application
The final workshop in the Making the Systems Explicit series is focused on bringing it all together and condensing it down to concise descriptions of the systems and results. This inter-active workshop takes the actual data gathered in the worksheets, analyzes it, and then drafts a concise description. Diagrams, which are often worth more than “10,000 words,” are used to show how system components are linked. The output of this workshop is a draft document in the format suitable for an organization award program such as the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award or a State Award.

Assess the Current Systems and Results
Assess the maturity of your system! Once your processes and results are documented, the next step is to assess the maturity of those processes and results using a proven performance excellence model and criteria. Genitect offers four services to support the critical review of your processes and results: senior leader “table-top” assessment; internal assessor training; third party assessment; and site visit preparation and coaching.
Senior Leader Table-top Assessment Workshop
Genitect offers a leadership workshop to “jump start” the organization's journey to performance excellence. This session provides an orientation to the performance excellence model and criteria and the methodology to assess the organization and redesign processes and practices to improve performance. For an organization beginning the journey, this 2-day workshop is typically the first session. During these two days the senior leader team actually assesses the organization’s 29 key systems and 6 scorecards. The output is a senior leader team that understands the performance excellence model and has a realistic perspective regarding their organization’s strengths and opportunities for improvement.
Internal Assessor Training
If you are developing your internal capability to assess your organization on a regular basis, we offer a 4 to 5 day internal assessor workshop. Patterned from the Baldrige Examiner training, this workshop has been modified to actually assess your organization’s systems and results. The result is a cadre of trained internal assessors and an actionable feedback report identifying the strengths and opportunities for improvement for your organization.
Third Party "Independent" Assessment and Feedback
If you already have your own internal improvement team and just want a third party evaluation of your processes and results we also offer organization assessments tailored to your specific needs. These assessments range from a “desktop” review of your application document to an actual site visit. Depending on your needs, the depth and detail of the feedback ranges from a high level “bullet point” style report to a detailed Baldrige style feedback report, including not only the identified strengths and opportunities for improvement of the organization as presented, but also a critique of the application itself.
Site Visit Preparation and Coaching
This Site Visit Management workshop is an interactive series of sessions over a four-day period that address planning for the key components of the journey to performance excellence including: training in conducting the site visit, do’s and don’ts for the site visit, coaching the leadership team, training individual leaders, training in roles and responsibilities, and training in the knowledge required for each level of the organization during the site visit. Participants will produce tangible plans for their own actions in the session. In addition, Genitect provides coaching during the site visit.
